P2 health versus disease
For the World Health Organization, "Health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity."For traditional Chinese medicine, health is the harmony of our body with the greater order, and disease is the loss of such harmony.
The machinery of our body constantly self-regulates to keep us in a fragile state of equilibrium. Invasion by pathogenic microorganisms, alterations in the function of organs and internal structures, aggressions from the environment, and other factors may upset the balance and cause disease, sometimes with fatal outcomes.
We labour incessantly to search for remedies against disease and redress the balance in their system.
To this end, they have used suggestion, rituals, placebos, natural remedies, self-control techniques, and the most exotic healing methods of all medical schools of thought: scientific or Western medicine, traditional medicine, natural medicine, etc.
Now we have available the scientific knowledge and the ability to synthesize, using biotechnology, genetic engineering, and other procedures, substances to cure or alleviate many different conditions. We are, however, still far from controlling disease in all its forms, and even further from making remedies available to a high percentage of the world's population.
This project contains six series depicting as many medical resources used in the fight against several pathologies: biopsy (one of the diagnostic procedures used in oncology),
Cannabis sativa (a medicinal plant used in neuropharmacology), and four active principles used in scientific medicine drugs: fluoxetine (an antidepressant), amoxicillin (an antibiotic), metformin (for the treatment of type-2 diabetes mellitus), and sildenafil or viagra (a peripheral vasodilator commonly used in the treatment of erectile dysfunction).
These series are an invitation to stroll at your own leisure through some fascinating microspaces of emotional energy that are full of new architectures, like worlds of another reality, a parallel universe for art, that can not be perceived by the naked eye.
I hope this journey of Visual and Aesthetic Therapy may inspire a reflection from the conciliation of the several medical approaches, about our vulnerability as living beings, and the universal right to health.
