biopsy: prevention, hope and life

Like a sinister character, rearing its head in a spooky story, this photographs depict the biopsy of what seems to be an esophageal tumor. For the patient, a dreadful uncertainty to be resolved through the analysis performed by an anatomical pathologist. The diagnosis, an end to a the distressing wait, sometimes to be resolved happily and sometimes tragically.

A thin section of our flesh, when examined properly, can reveal great amounts of clinical (albeit intimate) information, a slice of ourselves, sometimes weak, diseased, or lifeless.

On the other hand, a colon biopsy, in blood-red color, tells a similar story with personal undertones for the author of these snapshots: the tragic ending of someone close to his heart.

Colon and esophagus are two of the six most frequent types of cancer according to the WHO. The statistical implication of this is that most of us will eventually know somebody who will experience the distress of waiting for the results of a biopsy.

One may feel unsettled by observing these minuscule fragments of ourselves, this accumulation of cells (millions per cubic milliliter), and perceive in them yet another sign of our fragility. May these images serve as an invitation to avoid risk factors: unhealthy diets; sedentary lifestyles; alcohol; tobacco; physical, chemical, and biological carcinogenic substances; etc. This odd, creepy, green character warns us.

Where there's life there's hope, but with an early diagnosis and prevention.
